Christine Mulheren’s Best-Build Tip: Walk Your Plans Before You Build

When Christine Mulheren and her family began their DIY home-build journey with a contractor in 2023, she knew one thing for certain: they needed to get it right the first time.

“When we were designing our plans, there were so many ‘what ifs,’” she said. “And we know, once construction began, changes were going to be expensive and could cause major delays.”

As the deadline to finalize and submit their plans approached, Christine discovered Walk Your Plans — and that’s when everything shifted.

Christine’s architectural drawings and renderings were projected across walls and floors, allowing her to physically walk through each space. Suddenly, rooms weren’t just measurements on paper. They were places you could feel, see, and experience as if you were living in the home.

“With Walk Your Plans, we were able to feel how the spaces were in the house,” she said. “We asked ourselves if there was enough space in certain areas, we talked about furniture placement, windows, and all things that we wouldn’t have thought of if our plans were not right in front of us.”

Some of those changes Christine and her husband made by using Walk Your Plans include:

  • Moving the staircase back to create room for an entryway table

  • Adjusting bedroom windows to better accommodate bed placement

  • Tweaking the fireplace to improve family room flow

  • Widening the space between the stove and island so the dishwasher could fully open

  • Adjusting square footage throughout the home to better support the overall layout

Christine said it was also incredible to see her renderings projected to get a real feel of her new home—and even take measurements.

When you’re building a custom home, changes are going to happen. And it’s best to make those changes with Walk Your Plans before construction—otherwise it’s gonna cost you.

“I could go on and on about how beneficial Walk Your Plans was to our build journey. It allowed us to get our floor plans perfect before we broke ground, which was invaluable to us, especially since we designed our own plans.”

Looking back, Christine calls Walk Your Plans a confidence-boosting step that helped her build smarter and avoid costly regrets after construction.

“In our case, it saved us over $25,000 by walking our own floor plans to scale,” she said. “And it’s going to save you literally thousands as well.”
